I recently heard how important it is to keep healthy food choices at eye level in your refrigerator. Previously, when I opened my fridge I was staring at my husband’s beer, my kid’s pudding and condiments. I had to dig around to find something healthy and I was tempted by all that wasn’t.
Changing the way I stored the food (and beer) in our refrigerator was very simple. My husband may not like that he has to bend down to grab a drink, but oh well. Thanks to this very easy change, we are all eating just a little bit better now.
Here is a peek into our fridge…

Tips-
- Keep cut up veggies on hand. Raw veggies are so good for you! The crunch of raw vegetables is very satisfying for snacking. Also some vegetables are better for you when you eat them raw. For example, when you cook peppers the vitamin C is broken down. This is the case with a lot of vegetables. When they are cooked essential nutrients are broken down and vital enzymes are killed. So take the time and cut up some veggies! It’s worth the effort!
- Keep ingredients for a salad on hand. Salads are an easy way to increase your vegetable intake. Remember, you should be eating 2 fist size portions of vegetables with your meals. I find that nearly impossible unless I incorporate a salad!
- Keep a healthy side dish on hand. It often comes in handy when you need a quick lunch. Roasted veggies or a quinoa salad are good options. (I will include some healthy quinoa salads in a future post.) When I am in a pinch, my go to is a salad or healthy side dish with a chicken sausage.
- Eggs…you should always have them in your fridge! Eggs are inexpensive sources of high quality, nutritious protein. While high in cholesterol, studies show they do not adversely affect blood cholesterol. Eggs may also raise HDL (good) cholesterol. In a perfect world I would have hard boiled eggs in my fridge at all times as well.
