Battling the Sugar Addiction

To take control of my sugar addiction I had to go cold turkey.  This meant that I did not eat a single thing with added sugar for a month.  I also went a month without eating fruit or having an alcoholic drink.  I truly was addicted to sugar and consuming any tiny amount would trigger a cycle of cravings.  So, I opted out of foods that are naturally sweetened as well.  I had to stop the cycle of eating something sweet after every meal!  This may sound like an exaggeration, but it was one of the hardest things I have done in my life.  It was so difficult because it was something I had to battle every single waking minute.  Like an addict, I was grumpy and emotional.  This lasted for a few weeks and then things got better.

Today, almost two years later, sugar is not a battle.  I do struggle with it on occasion, particularly when I am at a party or event with amazing desserts.  I try to plan ahead and bring a special treat of my own.  My absolute favorite treats are Honey Mints!  They are like small pieces of heaven to an individual avoiding sugar.  The best part, they contain three ingredients-dark chocolate, honey and peppermint oil.  They are basically a healthy Peppermint Patty.

These bites of heaven can be found in health food stores or organic markets.  You can also order them on-line.
